to the world of South Brazilian Bromeliads !

The What's New page will inform you of the latest updates to this site.

My name is Ludwig Buckup, born in Brazil, 77 years old and a retired professor of Zoology at  Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul, in Porto Alegre, RS, Brazil. My wife Georgina, also a professor of Zoology at UFRGS, shares my interest in Bromeliads with some supplementary sympathy for Orchids. I was always fascinated by Bromeliads because these plants, chiefly epiphytes,  usually require trunks and branches of trees to establish and so their presence is associated with a healthy forest environment.
Some years ago I started collecting and growing broms on our small farm located outside Porto Alegre city, in South Brazil (29°46' South - 50°50' West). We call this place "Bromeliário Cairé" ("Cairé" Bromeliad Collection & Nursery).

Rio Grande do Sul is the southernmost State of Brazil. It neighbors Uruguay on the South and Argentina on the West. Look at the Map.
If you are interested in the names and photos of the Bromeliads that occur in South Brazil click here: Species.
Species from other places of the Americas were photographed, and if you want to see them, just click on Other species
.
Would you like to see the Bromeliad in Habitat ?
For those who wish to know more about South Brazilian bromeliads, click on Bibliography.
You can also find some information about observed BLOOMING TIMES by MONTH, or by SPECIES, these result from my  personal or communicated observations.
Special Topics gives you some suggestions and particularly my personal experience of growing bromeliads from seeds, seed germination,  seedlings, rooting, potting and other topics that might be interesting  for those who are beginners. Contributions are always welcome !
Also consider some other Sites where you may obtain important information about Bromeliads.

At first, I'll maintain this site only as a regional descriptive inventory. But in the future I hope to amplify the contents of this site, including all possible neotropical species of bromeliads
